Research Project SkaleD: Scaling Extrusion-Based Direct Coating

von Carina Albrecht

In January 2025, the collaborative project SkaleD officially launched, focusing on the scaling of extrusion-based direct coating for battery cell production. The aim is to transfer a promising process, previously validated at laboratory scale, into an industry-like environment and advance it towards industrial application.

By directly extruding electrode pastes, key steps in electrode manufacturing can be made more efficient. The significant reduction of solvent-based processes is expected to lower energy demand, costs, and material usage, while also improving workplace safety and sustainability. At the same time, this innovative technology opens the door to faster and more resource-friendly production of battery electrodes.

The project is being carried out by a strong consortium of industrial and research partners. Together, they are working to optimize the overall process chain and address central challenges related to scalability, quality, and sustainability.

SkaleD is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education, Research and Technology (BMFTR, formerly BMBF) as part of its efforts to strengthen Germany’s role as a technology leader in sustainable and innovative battery production. Through this funding, SkaleD contributes directly to the broader national strategy of supporting interdisciplinary research and accelerating industrial innovation.

For MANUGY, SkaleD represents an important opportunity to contribute its expertise in advanced production technologies and actively support the transition towards a more efficient and sustainable battery cell manufacturing ecosystem.
